In the course of the talk, the presenter could outline how to start a search, methods of searching a family history, problems encountered in the search, documentation techniques, sources of information, and other topic related to family genealogy. The workshop is scheduled for Thursday, 25 October, starting at 1:00PM and ending at 3:00PM with a ten minute coffee break at 2:00PM.

Friends:

I DON'T have Ted Wigney on our list. Do you know his coordinates?
Also, Ross mentioned, I believe, the death of Gerry Casey (hockey player),also unknown to me. Any info on him? Also, we have lost track of Darlene Lacroix and Joyce Chamberland. Let me know if you have any information.

E-mails Received:

Hi,
I wondered if someone could tell where the plaque commemorating the old RPL labs is located?
I understand it is near (in?) the Arboretum, but I'd like to get a photograph of that plaque before the winter weather sets in, and I need to know exactly where it's located.

Many thanks!

Hi John
There was a cement plaque built into the 'new' wall behind the auditorium. I'll send this on to see if others have any idea.
Stu

Hi Stu,
Thanks... but I should have given more information! The plaque I'm looking for was supposedly erected on the location of the Prescott Highway RPL labs after their demolition. I believe it's on the Experimental Farm grounds near the Arboretum, but if anyone can tell me exactly where the old labs were located on the old Prescott Highway, then I might be able to find the elusive plaque.
Thanks.
John

OK John I guess I should have wondered just where CRC keeps its arboretum.
Stu

(We got also a reply from Jack Belrose which unfortunately did not get supplied to the printed newsletter. Jack's reply presumably closes the topic:

There is no RPL Plaque on the Prescott highway --- there damn well should be. There is a Canadian Navy Plaque. There should be an RPL Plaque alongside. The Canadian Navy had a receiving staton prior to RPL moving there --- and some of our early work was concerned with receiving HF signals the Navy was previously monitoring.

DRTE came into being in 1953, at our present location.

Jack

Deaths:
Following are the obituaries which were not included in previous newsletters. The Ottawa Citizen will only allow recent obituaries to be copied without a charge so there are some I was unable to get. If a “Friend of CRC” passes away please let us know so we can include the information in the newsletter.

Erik L. (Len) HAGG passed away in Ottawa on September 11, 2007. Len Hagg was born in Sweden in 1919. He was a Ham operator in Sweden. In early 1940 he served as a radio operator with the Swedish Volunteer Corps of the Finnish Army which was fighting the Russians who had invaded Finland. Later in 1940 he came to Canada and served with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals from 1941 to 1949. He originally had a security problem because he had fought against our allies. From 1946 to 1949 he was in charge of the ionospheric station at Prince Rupert, B. C. In 1949, he joined the Defence Research Telecommunications Establishment on the Prescott Highway in Ottawa. Although he had limited formal education, his abilities as a scientific researcher were recognized. He continued to do ionospheric research with DRTE and CRC until his retirement in the mid 1980s. In the late 1950s and early 1960s he single handedly ran the ionospheric oblique sounding station, first in Slough, England and then in The Hague, Netherlands. He made some outstanding discoveries using the Alouette/ISIS topside sounding data. He discovered exceptionally low electron densities in the high latitude, high altitude ionosphere. He also discovered a resonance at the second harmonic of the electron cyclotron frequency which occurred up to 1000 km from the satellite.

Len is survived by his partner, Daphney Fluck, daughter Sylvia and several grandchildren.
