"THE COMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH CENTRE,
THE NEXT FIVE YEARS, PLANS AND
DIRECTION"

by DR. GERRY CHAN
Thursday, October 27, 2005
at 1:00 pm
in the CRC Auditorium

Dr. Gerry Chan,Vice President, Terrestrial Wireless Systems, CRC, has kindly agreed to address the Friends of CRC at their next meeting on Thursday, October 27, 2005. We have asked that he speak to us on plans and direction for CRC in the next five years and also to include comment upon the future and role for the Friends of CRC.
All Friends of CRC, their Spouses and friends, and Employees at the Shirley’s Bay Site are cordially invited.

FRIENDS OF CRC NEWSLETTER October 18,2005

Friends,
1. At our last Executive Board meeting a few items were discussed which will require help from Friends of CRC. It requires effort and time each month to make copies, stuff envelopes and send out 160 newsletters to the membership. We e-mail about another 160 copies which takes little effort and time, also, if something comes up between newsletters, such as a funeral, members are notified by e-mail as long as we have the information in time.
We believe that many members who receive the newsletter by mail have e-mail and if you would please send us your current e-mail address this would be a big help. We include the newsletter in the body of the e-mail so everyone can read it. We have avoided attachments as some members cannot open them. We also try to clean up the formatting so you will receive the newsletter as written. A typical newsletter is about 150KB or less.
2. We welcome and encourage contributions from members as these make the most interesting part of the newsletter. Each member has some anecdote or project which they could write about and this would be a great help in updating our milestones as many things are missing on the list. Also stories about fellow employees or things that have happened to you reveal the human side of the establishment at CRC.
3. Our Web Site is widely read and we endeavor to include as much information as possible and to be accurate and current. Expanding the Web Site is a high priority this year which will require your help. If you have e-mail or can use one at a library would you please take a look at the Friends of CRC Web Site at "friendsofcrc.ca" and give us your comments. Look at the milestones as we believe a lot of projects are missing. Are the projects you worked on at DRTE/CRC included in the list? If they are not please let us know. Are there any errors or omissions in the Web Site?
With thanks,
Your Executive

E-mails received:

On September 28, 2005, we received the following e-mail from Bob Kuley informing us about the new building construction at CRC. Thanks Bob.
Jim:
You mentioned the new building construction in your latest newsletter. This will be used to consolidate our photonics laboratories and personnel that are now located in several areas of buildings 2B and 2C. Some of those labs are getting quite old and can no longer safely accommodate our new equipment. We expect the new wing to be completed mid-2006. The vacated space can then be used for other research programs.
Bob

On October 18, Ed Halayko sent the following note and photo.
Water Bridge in Germany.... What a feat!

Six years, 500 million euros, 918 meters long.......now this is engineering!
This is a channel-bridge over the River Elbe and joins the former East and West Germany,
as part of the unification project. It is located in the city of Magdeburg, near Berlin.
The photo was taken on the day of inauguration.
To those who appreciate engineering projects.....
