What's New - April 2003

THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
and
A TALK
by
John D. Reid

"How to Search Your Family Roots from Ottawa"

Presented by The Friends of CRC

CRC Auditorium.

Thursday, April 24, 2003.

1:00 p.m.

Starting with what you already know, the talk describes how to develop information on your family tree. There is an explosion of records available on the Internet. Together with paper and microfilm records in archives these will, in most cases, allow you to develop a tree back several generations, and to explore some of the interesting people in it. A case study will be shown of an Ottawa family with origins in Staffordshire, England. John Reid is Director of the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa and a frequent lecturer and author on family history. He has a PhD in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University. Formerly he was Research Scientist, Research Manager and Director, Policy and International Affairs, with the Meteorological Service of Canada. He was born in England and came to Canada in 1966.

The Annual General Meeting will start after the talk (about 2:00 pm). Please
attend.

FRIENDS OF CRC NEWSLETTER

Friends,
Thanks to Kevin Shackell of CRC for inviting Friends of CRC to a very interesting talk by Dr. Basilio, a resident of Turin, Italy, titled, "The New Truth About Telephony". Dr. Basilio revealed evidence and drawings that showed that Meucci had discovered the inductive loading of long distance telephone lines at least 30 years before the Bell Company and Alexander Graham Bell.

Projects:
The High Speed Internet Project is on hold again but is expected to continue at a later date. We will bring you up to date in the Fall. There have been no reports received on other projects.

Future Events:

Presentation: Smart Antennas for Mobile Wireless Systems
An IEEE VTS & MTT/AP presentation, in collaboration with the Friends of CRC
Speaker: Jack Winters, consultant, formerly of AT&T, New Jersey
Date & Time: 6th May 2003, 1:30 PM
Location: Auditorium, building 2B, Communications Research Centre, Shirley Bay
Contact: Hugh Reekie h.reekie@ieee.org

Correspondence:
I received the following e-mail in reference to the notice of Dr. Basilio's talk.
Thanks for the info Jim. This should be an interesting presentation. Has anyone spoken to Gerry Turcotte about it? I assume they did. I remember, during the Wireless Marconi Conference in St John's Newfoundland back in the Fall 2001, I believe that Gerry and the CRC Board of Directors met in St John's and attended the official ceremony on Signal Hill. At the time, Brian Tobin who felt very comfortable on his local turf greeted the delegates as Minister of Industry. That was a great conference! I hope you are enjoying a nice Spring season Jim. I will be in Ottawa the end of April to attend the Smart Summit Conference. Who knows, perhaps I will run into Kevin or someone from CRC. Wishing you and former colleagues like Sam and others all the best!!! Fond memories of you and our chats Jim. Raymond Provencher

Thursday, April 24, 2003 Our Annual General Meeting in the CRC Auditorium following John Reids Talk (about 2:00 pm). Please attend.

This will be the last newsletter until next season unless something unexpected turns up. Thanks for everyones's e-mails, phone calls and letters this year as well as your attendance at our talks. Have a safe and enjoyable summer.
